Wet on wet watercolors. Read "Mouse Paint", Put the alphabet on the Smartboard. Have them write the alphabet in rows (use a rubber band on the paper to give them lines to write on). Paint a circle (donut) of water on the paper. Drip dots of paint (2 colors) on the water "donut" to blend.

First grade students talked about the Wizard of Oz. This was one of the first movies to use color. They were surprised that some movies were only in black and white. We discussed perspective while watching the poppy scene. They noticed that the poppies at the bottom were bigger than the flowers on top. PERSPECTIVE! They made poppies using tempera paint and oil pastels. Notice how flowers at the bottom look closer!

Kindergarten is going buggy!
One year our art teacher did something similar only using "around town" as a theme. The building at the time was all preschool and kindergarten. For weeks the theme was added to -cars, houses, people, stores, vehicles of all kinds, places of business, etc, etc, etc. Was so awesome to watch it evolve. Gm
"Where would you take Mona Lisa to make her smile again?" Really fun prompt that could be done even in kindergarten - ties in with art history, which is ALWAYS a plus!
