Paterson Ewen: Life & Work by John Hatch

Paterson Ewen’s treatment of landscape painting was far from traditional; it involved using large sheets of plywood that incorporated printmaking and sculpture. Ewen’s oeuvre was an inspiration for many Canadian artists who followed his example of experimentation and depictions of inner visions, making him a critical figure in the country’s cultural landscape. He remains one of the most highly regarded and innovative Canadian artists of his time. Read Paterson Ewen: Life & Work at www.aci-iac.ca

Paterson Ewen, Many Moons II, 1994, acrylic on plywood, galvanized steel, and livestock fencing, 244 x 190 cm, Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto, photograph by Mary Handford. Paterson Ewen, Decadent Crescent Moon, 1990, acrylic and metal paint on galvanized steel and gouged plywood, 236.3 x 244 cm, Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto. Usually Ewen’s moons are tranquil objects in the night sky. Here the crescent moon against a highly agitated background signals a crisis in his personal life. #ArtCanInstitute #CanadianArt

Paterson Ewen photographed with Gibbous Moon, 1980, at an exhibition of his work organized by the Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto, in 1988, photograph by Doug Griffin. Ewen’s orange shirt matches the dominant hue of this moon, which seems to identify the artist even more intimately with this work. #ArtCanInstitute #CanadianArt

Paterson Ewen, Rain Hit by Wind #1, 1971, Japanese ink on paper, 60.5 x 45.8 cm, Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto. Here, in one of his first “phenomascapes,” Ewen experiments with loose, unbridled lines. These would be replaced soon by directional arrows borrowed from scientific illustrations and then by the movement of the elements themselves. #ArtCanInstitute #CanadianArt

Paterson Ewen, Untitled, 1960, oil on canvas, 40.6 x 50.8 cm, McIntosh Gallery, London. Vertical lines are less common in Ewen’s abstract paintings; however, they do reappear as lightning or rain in the later landscape paintings. #ArtCanInstitute #CanadianArt

Paterson Ewen, Untitled, 1967, silkscreen, 66.5 x 50.9 cm, Museum London. The rigid lines of this work are a striking contrast to the looser ones in Untitled, 1960. Hyperstructured works like this one coincide with periods of instability in Ewen’s life. #ArtCanInstitute #CanadianArt
