John Singer Sargent (1856-1925) , Portrait of John Edward Murray-Smith | Christie's
JOHN SINGER SARGENT: Portrait of John Edward Murray-Smith. It is said that these pencil portraits took 1 hour and cost 80 pounds, a very great sum in those days. This example lacks a background, which in this case greatly heightens the youthfulness of the sitter. Sargent's pencil sketches though casual, show as much insight & thought, as do his more finished works in oils.
