From the book Prints of the Steel City: Hamilton had it's own financial district for a great many years in the early part of the 20th century. This imposing structure on James St., just north of Main, is a classic illustration of the type of banks from that era. Unfortunately this building was demolished and replaced with a parking lot.

Our latest book, 1961 Hamilton, is now at the printers, and should be available for purchase by the end of October, but in the meantime, here is a look at one of the photographs from the book. Battery Lodge in those days posed a serious traffic hazard for motorists driving along York Street, with at least one alderman calling for it to be demolished, claiming it had no historical value. http://www.canadianheritagebooks.com

From the book The Prints of King: The marquee of the Palace Theatre dominates the streetscape in this 1953 photograph looking west along King Street past Catharine. The photograph was taken three years before one-way traffic was introduced into downtown Hamilton, and at a time when there were no stoplights at this busy intersection. www.canadianheritagebooks.com

Lifesavers acquired the Beech-Nut Company, including the Hamilton plant, in 1931. By 1951, production shifted to a new facility and by 1969, they were producing over a billion candies each year. Shown here is a fleet of company vehicles that were used to help promote the Lifesaver candy. From: Vanished Hamilton III www.canadianheritagebooks.com
