1783 War of Independence NYC parole POW French Officer frigate Sybille
1783 parole document for Lt. Dufay, French Officer in the Picardie Regiment, captured in the naval battle of the 22nd January 1783 in Chesapeake Bay between his ship, the Sybille and the British ships HMS Centurion, HMS Hussar and Terrier. This is a true copy of his parole, whereby he will be exchanged for a British officer of same rank, and is signed by Thomas D. Hewlings, the British Deputy Commissary of naval prisoners at New York. The capture of the Sybille was controversial
