Gaming Unplugged Since 2000
Diplomacy - Arguably the most evil game ever created. This is a zero-luck game based on negotiation. More exactly, based on copious amounts of lying, manipulation, and cold blooded back-stabbing. I have seen people cry, scream and storm out from playing this. I love it.
Le Havre - One of the best economic games on the planet. Become an industry magnate in an industrial era French port town. Build, Produce, Ship Goods and make Money with unprecedented freedom. A game that truly allows for creativity, yet has some of the simplest rules you will encounter.
Troyes
Troyes - Recreate 500 years of history in a small French town. Well, really, spend 90 minutes grinding out points and kicking your opponents out of the parts of the town they want to be in. A very interesting take on dice based games that removes most of the randomness and instead rewards clever use of what you have available.
Commands & Colors: Ancients
This is what happens when wargamers have arts and crafts skills. "The Battle of Zama" using the "Commands and Colors: Ancients" rules. Fantastic wargame for 2 players recreating ancient battles between Rome and Carthage. Yes, we're getting deep into the world of geek here.
Power Grid
Power Grid - Build your power plants, expand your network, acquire the raw materials to power it all. The player who can manage their cash flow most effectively, acquire plants for the right price (at auction, yes this game has auctions, and who doesn't love those?) and predict the fuel market will win. Once again, an almost zero luck game.
Age of Steam
Age of Steam - See that "Railways of the World" game posted on this page? This is the version for assholes.
Gaming Unplugged Since 2000
Tobago - A rather clever logic game about treasure hunting. Lateral thinking required for success.
1830: Railways & Robber Barons
1830: Railways & Robber Barons | Image | BoardGameGeek 1830 is a game of industry. Take on the role of a railroad tycoon, and try to gather the highest net worth through investing in various railroad companies, sucking them dry and then dumping their worthless stock and liabilities on other unwary investors. Sure its 6 hours, and often played by people with questionable hygiene, but as economic games go, this is a classic.
CO₂
CO₂ | Image | BoardGameGeek Yes, a game about trying to be a power generator - without producing so much CO2 you toast the planet. Very interesting as it contains an endgame condition where everyone loses (CO2 rises beyond acceptable PPM). It's also very interesting, in that its one of a few games taking a look at current events. It's a trend I hope continues.
Neue Heimat
Neue Heimat - A vicious little auction/real estate development game. Super simple rules, but incredibly deep analysis that goes with each move.
Forbidden Island
Forbidden Island - Stellar game for kids. Cooperative game about treasure hunters trying to capture 4 artifacts on a sinking island. Each player takes on a unique role, with a unique special power, as they work together to collect the treasures before the island sinks into the abyss.
Gaming Unplugged Since 2000
Pandemic - A cooperative game about horrible virulent diseases breaking out and ravaging humanity. You represent a team of crack scientist charged with stemming the outbreaks and searching for cures before they spread too far and destroy life as we know it. The cubes are the clusters of different diseases.
Twilight Struggle
Twilight Struggle - 2 Players game re-enacting the cold war. Various real world events are re-created, however, when they happen, and how they end up effecting history is another matter entirely.
Eclipse: New Dawn for the Galaxy
Eclipse - This is what is known as a "4X" game: eXplore, eXpand, eXploit, eXterminate. Explore the cosmos, Expand your empire, exploit the new resources and technologies you find, and use them to exterminate your opponents.
The Campaign for North Africa: The Desert War 1940-43
The Campaign for North Africa - Pinned for no other reason than the sheer insanity of it. That is a picture of the game board, child included for scale. The game is essentially unplayable. The play time is listed at...wait for it...60,000 MINUTES!!! That is NOT a typo. That's right, this game takes 1000 hours to play. Who wants to get started?
