We are delighted to offer this very scarce embroidered bag that dates to 1790 to 1820 period. This beautifully embroidered heirloom item was created using traditional techniques. It was made in the late 18th, early 19th century on one of the many Greek Islands in the Aegean, possibly Cephalonia. Ref: The Met Museum Accession Number: 09.50.1359. Its design also resembles workbags that were popular in Europe during the last quarter of the 1700s. Ours could have been a Wedding bag, either made by or given to the lucky Mediterranean bride. The ground of this woven linen flax drawstring bag is profusely embroidered. We see typical stylized motifs of Greek/Ottoman influence including Cypress trees, and grapes.
