The delight of healthy exercise, speed, and freedom from chaperones coupled with long, flowing skirts made this new form of entertainment both dangerous and indecorous.

Before bloomers became acceptable for women cyclists, women had to deal with the problem of long skirts. An 1892 column in “outing” magazine provided helpful hints, such as ways to keep your skirt from flying about. These methods included sewing lead weights into the hem and using leather lined skirts. Still, long skirts hindered efficient peddling, interfered with balance and could become tangled in the bicycle.
