Construction of the Tillamook Rock Lighthouse began in 1879 and was completed in 1881. Originally, a keeper assigned to the rock spent three months on and two weeks off. At any given time there were four lighthouse keepers stationed at Tillamook Rock, also known as “TR.” The assignment was changed to 42 days on and 21 days off, because conditioned proved extremely harsh on both the physical and mental stability of the keepers. One of the lighthouse keepers, Bob Gerloff, hated to go ashore.

Sailors in the 1890s wore rain gear and cork vests if the weather turned stormy. In "Morgan and the Monster of the Deep" Morgan and Rusty climb out on the bowsprit. "They reached the sailor at the far end of the beam. He had a thick, long mustache, and a rain hat turned up at the front. He smiled at them, showing some black-edged teeth."
