Gum Benzoin is often called as gum Benjamin or storax and in India. it is widely known as Loban. Gum Benzoin is a fragrant balsamic resin obtained from tree species of the genus Styrax in the family Styracaceae. The Gum Benzoin tree (Styrax benzoin) is native to the tropical reaches of Java, Sumatra islands. It is harvested by making triangular incisions into the tree's bark to establish a flow which then hardens into lumps when exposed to air and sunlight.

The usage of benzoin resin can be traced back to Ancient Romans and Greeks, where benzoin was used in incense and potpourri. Apparently, this oil has been used for thousands of years for its healing effects on the mind.

Benzoin tree is native to South East Asia and grows to 8 meters (20 feet) in height. Resin is extracted by making deep incisions in the tree. The resin is then collected once it becomes hard and brittle. Benzoin Essential Oil is then extracted from the hard resin using solvent extraction.
