In the early 20th century, one of the brightest lights on America’s theatrical stage and on its cinematic screen was actor, director, writer and producer Alla Nazimova. Few women shined as brightly but now she languishes largely forgotten and neglected. Portly, versatile British-American stage and film actor Charles Laughton (1899 – 1962) was often type-cast for arrogant, unscrupulous characters. He was one of the most popular actors of the 1930’s and 1940’s, and gave some of his greatest performances as Nero, Henry VIII, Mr. Barrett, Inspector Javert, Captain Bligh, Rembrandt, and Quasimodo.
