As water freezes it expands and breaks occur on the surface of river ice. The ice thickness here is about six inches thick, enough to support the weight of a car. When these cracks form they do so with a loud and palpable thump, often muffled by covering snow. It's a bit unnerving when they occur underfoot like this one.
