The unsung hero of the German army in WW2 was the horse. When Germany attacked Russia, the horse was still the backbone of the army transport system as Germany never gained an upper hand in providing her land forces with full strength motorized means. A perennial shortage of trucks and other vehicles kept horses in demand and fully deployed throughout the war fronts.
