a small wooden musical instrument with strings attached to it's stand on the floor

Theresa wanted to know about my floor Inkle loom, so I thought this would be a good chance to share about it. It is called the "Harpsichord" and it is made by Maggie at Windhaven Fiber Tools. That is also the name of their Etsy shop. Maggie makes all sizes of Inkle looms, and all sorts of wooden fiber tools. Maggie gives you several choices of wood, and with your choice the very reasonable price varies. This Inkle loom can make a band up to 18 ft. Since the band could be really long, there…

Discover and Build an Inkle Loom!: I've been thinking about weaving for a while as something I might enjoy to pass the time or teach my children. The weather is getting colder lately and I'm finding more excuses to lay about in the warm house. One problem with weaving is that it can…

a wooden structure made to look like a boat

I have learned a few things about weaving in my time, so I’m going to share a hack with you. First I’ll give you some vocabulary. “Warp” describes the long threads that go the length of the fabric. “Weft” describes the threads that go sideways across the fabric. “Take up” describes how much the warp is taken up by going over and under the weft. a hand holding a wooden rack with several wine bottles

This morning Bob and I left New Mexico and drove almost four hours to the little town of Van Horn, Texas. Van Horn is a town that has little to offer except a place to get off the road when you’re on the way to someplace else. We leave tomorrow morning for Fort Stockton, Texas. I wanted to share about my new loom that Bob made for me. On Ravelry, the inkle weaving group has been discussing Keel Looms, which are built using the plans found in the book “Small Looms in Action,” by Elizabeth…

a wooden sculpture sitting on top of a table in front of a caged area

This is a loom tat we originally got the directions from the Small Looms book. I had Will make it bigger and add some new features to it. It's turned out great! He's even made a lovely shuttle to go with it.

a group of wooden looms sitting on top of a white table next to a pair of scissors

For the first 9 months of my time as editor of Handwoven, I passed an inkle loom every day on the way to my desk. It really bugged me. Someone had warped it with icky, thin yellow yarn and woven about 2 inches with the same yarn.
