The Maori meeting house 'Tama-Te-Kapua' (built 1878) on Te Papaiouru Marae at Ohinemutu village in Rotorua is named after the paramount chief and captain of the Arawa Canoe which journeyed from Hawaiiki to New Zealand around 1350 A.D. Some carvings on this building probably pre-date the structure because it is said that materials from previously existing buildings were recycled into it. During 1939 it was dismantled and rebuilt, reopening in 1943.
