Understanding Longitudinal and Transverse Waves
Types of Mechanical Waves: Longitudinal and Transverse Waves
Waves are a fundamental aspect of the physical world, occurring in various forms, from the waves in the ocean to the vibrations of sound in the air. A mechanical wave is one of the two primary categories of waves which require a medium to travel through. There are two types of mechanical waves: longitudinal and transverse waves. Understanding the characteristics and behaviours of these waves is essential to many areas of science and technology. This blog post will explore the characteristics…

What are longitudinal wavesIn this case, Individual particles of wave move in direction of propagation of wavesIn easy language, particles of medium move back and forth (left and right) making nearby particles of medium vibrateExampleIf we stretch a slinky, it moves left and right (in the direction
Longitudinal Sound Waves: Constructive vs Destructive Interference
Sound waves are Longitudinal
Amplitude is max. magnitude of displacement (= height from equilibrium position (= fixed nonmoving position that waves move around)) Longitudinal waves compress. Constructive interference = if perfectly in phase then wave variables are additive for 2 waves. Destructive interference = if perfectly out of phase (180 degrees) then wave variables are subtractive for 2 waves. Antinodes = midway b/t nodes where amp. is at max. (moving). Nodes = place on wave always at rest, amp. is 0 (non-moving).

Sound Sound - Vibrations that travel through air or other mediums and can be heard when they reach the ear of a living creature. Vibration - The back-and-forth movement of particles of an elastic (stretchable) body or medium. Compression - Molecules moving together in a sound wave. Rarefaction - Part of a sound wave when molecules move apart. Sound wave - a wave of compression or rarefaction, by which sound is propagated in an elastic medium such as air.
