Before bloomers became acceptable for women cyclists, women had to deal with the problem of long skirts. An 1892 column in “outing” magazine provided helpful hints, such as ways to keep your skirt from flying about. These methods included sewing lead weights into the hem and using leather lined skirts. Still, long skirts hindered efficient peddling, interfered with balance and could become tangled in the bicycle.

(In the Victorian Era, you had an eating utensil or dish for every option and you had the proper clothes for the proper activity.)
