Always always get tested and talk to your provider about your symptoms! Elevated estrogen or "estrogen dominance" as it's commonly referred to can manifest in a number of different ways from heavy periods, PMS, headaches, fatigue, or weight gain. There's 3 phases of estrogen detox in order to remove estrogen from the body. If any one of these steps isn't working properly, then you may need a little help getting that estrogen to move along. You need to have a daily bowel movement in order to get rid of estrogen. Even if everything else is going great, without that daily BM you're outta luck. If this is not happening, increasing fiber and fluids can be helpful. Cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, cauliflower, kale, cabbage are also great for keeping estrogen in check. They have phytochemicals that can block the production of excess estrogen as well as make sure you're detoxing estrogen properly! A non-diet related change you can also work on to keep your estrogen in check is to work on reducing the amount of xenoestrogens in your environment. These are chemicals that can mimic estrogen in the body. Some simple ways to reduce these: reduce plastic, limit synthetic fragrances, switch to cleaner beauty and household products. There are supplements that can help with estrogen dominance, such as DIM, but it's not a good idea to take anything without knowing for sure that estrogen is your problem, cause you can end up swinging things in the other direction, which is also not good! If you think estrogen dominance may be your problem, I do DUTCH testing in my practice, which is an at home test to measure hormones.
