Captain William Kidd (1645-1701). The belief Kidd left buried treasure ensured the growth of his legend. He did bury a small cache of treasure on Gardiners Island, Suffolk County, Long Island, in a spot called Cherry Tree Field; however, it was removed and sent to England as evidence against him. On Grand Manan Island, Charlotte county, New Brunswick, Canada, lies treasure allegedly buried by Kidd. For nearly 200 years, this remote area of the has been called "Money Cove".
