If you're an artist, or just like to dabble, the results you get will vary not only because of the talent you have, but also due to the quality of the supplies you chose to use. The quality & color range vary from each manufacturer. My personal preference is soft pastels (rather than oil pastels). The soft "chalk" type are available in firmer sticks - on down the line to very soft, as well as in the Pan Pastel line. The surfaces vary from special textured to sanded papers & boards.
