26 October 1943 - On this day, 70 years ago, Canadian Film & Photo Unit photographer Lt. Terry Rowe was in the mountain village of Colle d’Anchise when he captured Private M.D. White of The Loyal Edmonton Regiment observing through a broken stone wall in the village. Rowe shot this photo with two different cameras — one for this colour transparency, and the other a B&W 2-1/4” square format, perhaps a Rolleiflex as used by other WW2 photographers like Robert Capa and Ken Bell.
FIVE months before he was killed in ANZIO, Lt. Terry Rowe took a photo of Private Dave King, his driver with the Canadian Army Film and Photo Unit, talking with an Italian man who had lived in King’s hometown of Burlington, Ontario, for a number of years. Photo taken by Rowe in Delianuova, Italy, ca. 5 September 1943. (Library and Archives Canada a183310). Dave King was injured at Anzio by the same 88mm shell that killed Rowe on 6 February 1944.
