UIC today
UIC News Center - A study conducted at the University of Illinois at Chicago revealed the banning of vending machines actually increased soda consumption among high school students when soda was still available in the cafeteria or store. Without vending machines, more students turned to fast food. High school students will choose high-calorie, high-fat foods if they are available from another source. Soda and fast food intake depended in part on local and state tax rates. Price affects consumption. A comprehensive school policy about healthy food can make a difference, but isolated changes will not.
Running out of space
Those who are interested in space travel are sorely disappointed since the last U.S. space shuttle was grounded in 2011. For more than 30 years these space shuttles were sent on missions to help build the International Space Station. The grounding of the space shuttles is due largely to the fact that each flight cost nearly a half billion dollars and there were two explosions that killed 14 astronauts. Although the space station has been abandoned it seems to have a limited impact on scientific discovery.
