Processing milkweed silk
It's -17°C today. Perfect day to experiment with processing milkweed silk, one of the best natural insulation materials. Its volatile nature makes it difficult to handle but Eliane is figuring out some very effective techniques to extract, clean and bundle the fibres in a single take. This lot will go into a pair of mittens.

Flintknapping initiation
Marie's flintknapping initiation with low grade Onondaga chert. The objective was learning the basics of percussion to produce usable flakes. In just a couple of hours she learned hammer stone spalling, antler direct/indirect percussion and pressure flaking. She even completed a hafted hide scraper. Not bad for one afternoon. An impressive learning curve on very tough material. Now it's all down to practice!

Experiment firing pottery fragments in a fireplace (can't fire it outside in winter!)
How do you fire pottery in mid-winter? I mean the prehistoric way! Well, Marie came up with a plan to get it done while enjoying home comforts. I had my doubts about the efficiency of an indoor fireplace for that purpose but it worked sufficiently well for these potsherd reproductions. I guess the heat refraction compensated for the limited output. A successful low heat firing giving us more clues about ancient pottery.

Removing scales and skinning a fish using semi-lunar slate knives
Today, Marie prepared lunch the prehistoric way using semi-lunar slate knives. Such knives have been used for thousands of years in North America from the Pacific to the Atlantic and across the Arctic. The Inuit used them for a variety of tasks but early designs from the Laurentian Archaic tradition can be interpreted as fish knives based on those of the Pacific coast. The edge is extremely sharp but quite brittle so they are best suited to process soft flesh and thin skin.
