a surviving 17th century piece of raised work embroidery that was likely done in France. Raised work is achieved by first applying a layer of padding that is secured in position with couching stitches. Then there may be a layer of fabric laid over that so that the embroidery work has something to attach to. Then the actual stitch work can be accomplished.
