Residential Schools in Canada

the Indian Act of 1876 had stressed Native Assimilation. Residential schools were prominent during the 1920's with 80 residential school by the end of the decade. Children 7-15 were taken from families and sent to live at the schools. At the residential schools, the children were given new names, stiff uniforms, and European haircuts. they were also severely punished if caught speaking their own languages.
