NuBone Co. Celluloid Box ~ Originally sold with Twinkies Brand Infant clothes inside. In good used condition, please see photos for condition detail. There is a little scratch on the very upper left of the box top. Minor scuffing through years of use as well. No cracks. Measures 8 1/2 x 6 3/4 x 1 1/4 inches NuBone's claim to fame was their NuBone Corsets that were made at the Erie PA plant in the heyday of corset wearing. Their ads were featured in ladies magazines proclaiming comfort! Another focus of production for them was a high end infant clothing line called Twinkies. I have placed the date of the box as 1930's, however I think the age could be anywhere from the 1900 date when NuBone started production until the 1950's. One wonders at the woodland creatures on the front, they sure look a lot like Bambi and Thumper. Disney released Bambi in 1942 and NuBone was still in production at that time. They could have gotten on that bandwagon, hard to say, baby forest animals are certainly a good motif for children's products. There is no Disney endorsement of this box, just to be clear. In researching the company, I see no dispute with Disney, but disputes over women's labor unions. The delicious sponge cake Twinkies were being made in the 1930's as well, but the box is not tall enough to hold those treats. It is my humble opinion that they were doing their own thing in Pennsylvania and just happen to make a box that was super similar to other products going on at the time. Not too surprising that they would make a celluloid box as they were making corsets that needed to be stiff and yet flexible ~ perhaps out of a similar material. What fun it would be to see what came in the box originally~ would it be a matching layette, a pretty dress or a boy's romper and hat? This is an adorable box and would be a neat addition to any vintage decor~ Thanks for looking~!
