Saint Valentine is a third-century Roman saint, and is the patron saint of love and happy marriage. He was arrested for marrying Christian couples, and the townsfolk wrote letters to him while he was in prison. He wrote each one of them back - thus started the "valentines". During his prison stay, he befriended the emperor - but it was to no avail. He was martyred on February 14, 269, yet his presence remains with us even today.
