I don't agree with the idea that you should strive to make all your thoughts positive. Negative thoughts are normal, they are part of the human experience. The mind is going to produce them from time to time. I think the issue we get into is that we attach ourselves to negative thoughts, we latch onto them, and let them take us on a ride The goal is to detach.
