Wow! Ancient Mars Could Have Supported Primitive Life, NASA Says
It's official: Primitive life could have lived on ancient Mars, NASA says. A sample of Mars drilled from a rock by NASA's Curiosity rover and then studied by onboard instruments "shows ancient Mars could have supported living microbes," NASA officials announced today (March 12) in a statement and press conference. The discovery comes just seven months after the Curiosity rover landed on Mars to spend at least two years determining if the planet could have ever supported primitive life.

Detection of cosmic effect may bring universe's formation into sharper focus
The first detection of the kinematic Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (kSZ) effect, which has a unique ability to pinpoint velocity and could be useful in understanding the expansion of the universe. As cosmic microwave background radiation left over from the Big Bang (top) moves through the universe, it becomes slightly redder and cooler if it passes through a galaxy cluster moving away from Earth (left). The radiation becomes bluer and hotter if it passes through a cluster moving toward Earth (right).

VISTA gigapixel mosaic of the central parts of the Milky Way
9gigapixel image of the Milky Way reminds us how small we truly are / This huge picture is 108 500 by 81 500 pixels and contains nearly nine billion pixels. It was created by combining thousands of individual images from VISTA, taken through three different infrared filters, into a single monumental mosaic.
