Family Law, a novel by Gin Philips
The old saying goes “don’t judge a book by its cover,” and sometimes you can’t judge a book by its title either. Family Law by Gin Phillips caught my eye was we walked into our library, because the title made me think of a law school textbook. The cover featured artsy pink flowers on a brown door, making me think it was a novel. I flipped it over and read the back cover and was intrigued by the blurb about a female lawyer in a time what that was rare.
Becoming Mrs. Lewis by Patti Callahan
When a mom writer friend of mine recommended Becoming Mrs. Lewis to me, I immediately looked it up at my library. Like many others, I’ve grown up reading C. S. Lewis’ fiction but I know very little about his wife. Joy Davidman Gresham and C. S. Lewis met via letters between New York and Oxford, but theirs is an exceptional and inspiring love story. Patti Callahan brings Joy—and all her struggles as a mom, writer, and lover—to life in the pages of this fascinating novel.
After She Falls by Carmen Schober {novel review}
I’ve been interested in martial arts as a form of self-defense for years. After She Falls by Carmen Schober caught my eye because it’s the story of a female mixed martial arts fighter. Although taking a few martial arts classes just in case interests me, I can’t imagine loving MMA as a sport and wanting to fight other women. So I picked up this debut novel from curiosity about this sport and the women who pursue it.

Do Family Courts Really Protect Families?
The reality of domestic violence and emotional abuse that so many women and children have to deal with is devastating. And as we see in “Maid”, once a woman has bravely left her abuser, the court system often continues to hurt her and her children. I want to help raise awareness of the broken family court and legal system that not only doesn’t protect abused mothers and their children but enables further abuse.
