Viking Things

The Old Norse noun "víking" refers to an expedition overseas. In later texts, such as the Icelandic sagas, the phrase "to go on a viking" implies participation in raiding activity. During the 20th century, the meaning of the term was expanded to refer not only to seaborne raiders from Scandinavia, but secondarily to any Scandinavian who lived during the period from the late 8th to the mid-11th centuries, and that is what you will find here.

Oseberg ship Centrally placed on the ship were the skeletons of two women whose remains had been placed in a specially built wooden tent. One of the woman was in her eighties The second woman had died in her early fifties. Some have speculated that one of the women may be Queen Åsa, the grandmother of Norway’s first king. There were also found animal bones from 14 or 15 horses, a cat, an Eurasian woodcock, a red-breasted merganser, a bull, a cow and four dogs.

Textile Crafts was a common female occupation. At the top of a small tube for needles and a flywheel that you could spin with. In the middle a sisare (Viking scissor) and at the bottom a weight. To the right a glättbräda. It was used to get clothes ironed by rubbing them with a trowel. Oh! my favourite stuff :)

In 1834, a landowner in Hon (Norway) found a treasure - five and a half pounds of gold. The treasure included a brooch decorated with ornaments of vine and leaves, 20 Frank coins , two necklaces and many bracelets. The dates stamped on coins indicate that the treasure was buried in about 860; it was then that the Franks, as evidenced by the records of their treasurers, paid 5 thousand pounds of silver to the Scandinavian invaders.

This treasure was found in 1875 in connection with trenching on the Hoen farm by the Drammenselva river in Buskerud county. The place was strategically located in relation to travel routes in the Viking Age and control of goods between the inner parts of Eastern Norway and the coast. Early Medieval Viking gold finger ring, 9th-10th century. The ring is substantially gold and consists of a broad, punch-decorated band tapering sharply at each end to wire terminals which were originally twisted together; width, 26 mm. On either side of a very worn, beaded median rib the ring is decorated with two rows of interlocking punched triangles with triple pellets in each. The ring has been distorted while in the ground and the ends are now almost untwisted as a result.

Late Anglo-Saxon period. The ring is of a type that is associated with the Vikings, and was popular during the 9th and 10th centuries AD.
