We found this slide of a Public Works truck (circa 1919) in our archives today. Before we became the Department of Highways in 1954, we were known as the Department of Public Work. We`re now the BC Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure.

Every year, our ministry avalanche technicians deliver search and rescue training to maintenance contractors who work on BC highways, located below some 1,388 avalanche paths. Should an unexpected avalanche cover an open highway, these workers are nearby and ready to help.

It takes the right mindset to protect roadside workers. It takes respect for the men and women whose lives depend on drivers seeing the value in their safety. Take care in the Cone Zone, and Slow Down and Move Over for roadside workers. It's the law in B.C.

We’d like to introduce traffic controller Sharon Harris. She’s a pro when it comes to keeping construction crews, special event participants, drivers, pedestrians and many others safe when there’s action on B.C. roads. We recently chatted with Sharon to learn what it’s like to work as a flagger. (Hint: it’s not a breeze.) - See more at: http://tranbc.ca/2013/07/18/what-its-like-to-be-a-traffic-controller-in-the-cone-zone/#sthash.6mY7lzjS.dpuf
